The Long Thanh International Airport project is a project to build an international airport in Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province; about 40 km east of Ho Chi Minh City.
Phase 1 of this project is expected to be inaugurated in 2025. With a capacity of up to 100 million passengers/year when completing phases (including 3 phases); This will be the largest airport in Vietnam in the future.
The Prime Minister of Vietnam signed Decision No. 1777 / QD-TTG dated November 11, 2020, approving the investment project to build Long Thanh International Airport phase 1 (1 terminal with the capacity of 25 million passengers/year; one runway 4000 m x 75 m, 01 air traffic control tower about 123 m high, and other related works); is expected to commence design and completion of construction in the period of 2020- 2025.
On January 5, 2021, the Long Thanh airport project officially started construction of phase 1 with the participation of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Transport, and related agencies.
Vietnam Airlines is suggested by the project consultants as the only Vietnamese carrier to operate domestic flights; other airlines will operate international flights only in this new airport.
Geographical location of Long Thanh International Airport
According to the master plan, the location of Long Thanh international airport is located in Binh Son commune, Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province; 40 km east of Ho Chi Minh City; 43 km from Tan Son Nhat Airport; 30 km southeast of Bien Hoa city; 70 km from Vung Tau city to the North, next to Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway near Long Thanh town; and 10 km from the gateway to Nhon Trach Industrial City (urban vicinity of Ho Chi Minh City).
Technical parameters
According to the master plan, after the completion of this airport, there are four newest international standard runways (4000 meters long, 60 meters wide) that can serve giant two-tier aircraft like Airbus A380. Boeing 747-8 has 4 large and modern terminals with a total capacity of serving 100 million passengers/year.
The cargo terminal with a capacity of 5 million tons/year. The land area around the airport is about 25,000 hectares (of which the area of Long Thanh international airport is about 5,000 hectares); and according to the plan, Long Thanh airport will be an air transit port of Vietnam and the world.
Long Thanh Airport will be an airport grade 4F (the highest level) or higher according to ICAO standards.
Construction progress
According to the policy approved by the National Assembly in June 2015, Long Thanh airport will be built with a design capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year. In particular, the construction will be divided into 3 phases.
The goal that the Ministry of Transport set out is to start Long Thanh Airport in 2020; complete in 2024 and put into operation in the first phase in 2025.
– Phase 1: will invest in a runway and a passenger terminal with synchronous auxiliary items with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year. . By 2025, phase 1 will be completed and put into operation.
– Phase 2: To continue investing in building an open-configuration runway and a passenger terminal; to reach a capacity of 50 million passengers/year and 1.5 million tons of cargo/year.
– Phase 3: completing project’s items to achieve a capacity of 100 million passengers / year and 5 million tons of cargo / year.
When completed, the airport will have 4 terminals and 4 runways, and is expected to be completed by 2040.
